Chapter
3 - School's Out Alex looked at his watch for what must have been the millionth time in the last ten minutes. Where was she? When they had spoken on the phone the previous night before she got on the plane she had assured him 3pm at the latest, and here it was, 3.25 and no sign of her. “Come on Liz. You know you hate to leave your old buddy Alex hanging like this…” Sunday afternoon and Alex was sitting alone on a bench at the park. Liz was flying back from Vermont today, for good. Summer term was finally over, and they had all graduated. Even Michael, which had shocked everyone. The amount of time he spent actually in classes had greatly increased in the past year, but it had apparently come as a shock to the teaching establishment of Roswell that Michael Guerin actually had a very intelligent brain in his head, when he felt like using it. No surprise to anyone that Liz and Max both graduated with honours, as had Alex and Isabel. Liz’s parents had flown up to Vermont to attend the ceremony, and were bringing Liz back with them today. Everyone was looking forward to seeing her again. Apart from Alex, who had seen her once when he joined her parents on a short visit during the Christmas break, they hadn’t seen her since the previous summer, over nine months past. Unfortunately for Max, the Parker’s were holding firm on their refusal to let him see their daughter. Liz and Max didn’t want to have to sneak around just to see each other, but unless they could find a way to persuade her parents that Max Evans wasn’t just out to defile their daughter, it didn’t look like they were going to have much of a choice. Alex looked down at his watch again. 3.26. He couldn’t believe it had only been a minute since his last obsessive check. The last year, with Liz at school in Vermont, and Maria launching her music career had been hard on Alex, especially at first. The pair had been his best friends since elementary school, so it was hard to suddenly not see them every day. At least he’d still had the rest of the gang to keep him company. And these last few months, especially Isabel. But sometimes, all he really wanted was an old friend. Someone to talk to, *really* talk to, about his fears and hopes for his relationship with Izzy. Someone he knew would provide the sounding board he needed from time to time. Talking on the phone was one thing, but it just wasn’t the same as talking face to face with his best friends. And now Liz was back. Looking up, he saw her waving at him as she crossed the grass to reach his lonely bench. “Alex!!!” Alex stood and ran across the grass to sweep his old friend up in a hug. “Liz! It’s so good to see you!” “You too Alex. The girls at school were lovely to me, but they were no substitute for the girlfriend extraordinaire that is Alex Whitman” Liz jested. “Why thank you,” Alex replied in an affected tone. “And as an honorary girl, is an old friend allowed to ask how your flight was?” Liz slapped Alex playfully on the arm. “I would never have thought it was possible, but you’re actually crazier than you were the last time I saw you! My flight was fine, despite the fact that it dragged on for days.” “That’s just cos you couldn’t wait to get here and see me,” Alex teased. “You know it.” Liz agreed, giggling. “So,” she began, “I think we have a lot of catching up to do. Proper catching up. It just isn’t the same over the phone.” “That we do,” Alex agreed, nodding, “That we do. And I bet you can’t wait to see the rest of the gang either. Surely your parents won’t stop you from seeing Max when it’s with the rest of us.” Liz shook her head sadly. “I really don’t know. I think they’d shut me up under lock and key until I was 30 if they had their way about it. And after what they saw last summer, they really really really want to keep me away from Max Evans.” Alex pulled Liz into a consolatory hug as they sat down on the bench Alex had previously been waiting on. “Now that I’m back I doubt he’d even be allowed to eat at the Crashdown, especially if I’m working.” Liz sighed deeply, then shook her shoulders as if physically shrugging off the topic. “Anyway, that’s enough of that for the moment. I’m trying not to think too hard about the tension between Max and mom and dad. I want to hear about everyone here. Surely something must have happened in the last couple of weeks while we didn’t get a chance to talk.” “Well, we graduated. But you already know that.” Liz rolled her eyes at Alex. “Although Kyle and Tess nearly missed the ceremony.” “Should I ask?” “Probably not, but I can sense you’re about to anyway. They turned up about twenty minutes late, and both looked a little out of breath. Almost like they’d been running somewhere, despite the fact that we saw them at school about ten minutes before the start. Actually, a lot of people did.” Liz started to chuckle quietly. “They did try to sneak in quietly at the back unnoticed, but you know what the doors to the assembly hall are like.” Liz was utterly lost in giggles. “Yeah, I remember…I remember…” Liz took a deep breath, trying to stave away the laughter for long enough to finish her sentence.” I remember trying to sneak in late to assembly that one day. It just isn’t possible to get in quietly.” Her laughter was infectious, and Alex had begun to chortle at the memory. “Everyone turned around to see who it was. The looks on their faces.” Alex clutched his sides, he was laughing so hard now. “They just….” Snort. “You can imagine.” “I bet they were glad they didn’t have to turn up to any more days of school after that.” Liz managed to choke out. “Oh yeah” Liz and Alex giggled uncontrollably for several more minutes before finally regaining some command over themselves. “Neither Kyle nor Tess showed their face in public for a few days after that.” Alex began, still struggling to keep a straight face. “If anyone had missed the fact that they were dating, they’d certainly know by now huh?” “I don’t think many people were surprised. Hysterical, yes, but not surprised.” Alex confirmed, nodding. “Most people expected them to get together from the moment Tess moved in with them. I think some of Kyle’s team-mates were more surprised at how long it was before they started actually dating than anything else.” “I know some of those guys pretty well from way back when I was seeing Kyle. The first thought on most of their minds if a girl moved in with them would be how to, you know… jump her bones.” “Most of those guys didn’t expect them to last this long though. They just don’t know Kyle and Tess like we do.” “I know Tess did a lot of soul searching to discover how crazy she is about Kyle. I don’t think that’s something either of them are going to give up.” “You haven’t even seen the this last year. They’ve become closer than any of us thought was possible. And the change it’s made in Tess, it’s astounding. Apart from having a Buddha-loving jock hermetically attached to her side, she’s like, content, you know?” Alex paused as Liz nodded thoughtfully. “Before, she was chasing something she’d been told she wanted all her life. But it wasn’t something that could really make her happy. In discovering that she wanted Kyle, she also discovered herself. I’m glad they’re getting along so well. They deserve it.” Alex just grinned, no words needed to let Liz know he agreed. “So do you, Alex. I know you waited a long time for it, but I’m glad the Ice Princess finally woke up to the wonderful guy she had right under her nose.” A radiant look flashed across Alex’s features at the mention of Isabel, a soft glow appearing in his eyes, and a sappy grin hovering at the edges of his mouth. “I see that look Alex Whitman,” Liz smiled. “I take it things are still going well between you two.” Alex sighed. “Yeah. She just, she makes me feel so alive when I’m with her. But…” He stopped. “But what, Alex?” “What if she’s not feeling the same? I’m pretty crazy about her, and I know she likes me, but what if it’s just that? Like, and nothing more.” “Alex…” “I mean, I know she wants to be with me now, but what if it really is only like for her, and she meets someone she feels more strongly about. I thought that getting to know her as a friend would stop me getting hurt, but what if it doesn’t?” Alex looked right at Liz. “What if when we start college in the fall, she meets someone better than me? Maybe I was alright as a high school boyfriend, but not as something she sees lasting for the rest of her life? What if…” Liz could see Alex was getting a little agitated and moved to put her hand on his arm comfortingly. “Alex,” “…what if she gets to…” “Alex,” Liz was more insistent, and Alex paused in his worried rant. “Huh?” “Slow down there. Stop and think about it for a second. Think about all you know about Isabel, the kind of person you’ve grown to know.” Alex grew silent for a few moments and he closed his eyes to think calmly. When he opened them, the slight smile was back on his lips. “She’s wonderful. And in my head, I know that she isn’t the type to just drop me. Not now.” Alex sighed deeply. “But in my heart, I’m terrified it could still happen.” |
