Lonnie awoke from her restless sleep with a gasp, rousing Rath, who had been sleeping soundly beside her. “Sup Lon”?” he grumbled sleepily, dragging his hand across his goateed chin. “Dunno. Some weird shit in my head that ain’t comin’ from me. Dunno who it’s comin’ from neither, but I got an idea wheres I can find out. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The eight Roswell friends climbed out of their various vehicles and walked towards the rock formation that had dominated so much of their lives the past few years, and especially the last few weeks. “I guess we’re gonna be out here a whole lot more now huh?” Kyle remarked as they met. Max nodded. “Another school year over. And not to be dramatic, but our training out here could be the only thing preventing it being our last.” A collective sigh went around the group as they realised the unfortunate truth of his words.
Training that day started out much like the others they’d had in the previous weeks. The four aliens would work on honing their powers, the humans encouraging them with alternating praise and threats. All eight worked on their general fitness and fighting skills. It was Maria who first noticed the strangers who turned up a few hours later. Four people had appeared close by, watching them. Their resemblance to Max, Isabel, Michael and Tess was startling. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * “That’s them,” Lonnie confirmed as Zan looked at her questioningly. “An that’s da rock too.” Rath and Ava stared unabashedly at their doubles. They’d had an idea that another set existed, but they had never imagined coming face to face with them. Unconsciously drawing closer to each other, they started to walk to meet the group of eight teenagers who had stopped to watch them warily. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Isabel gasped. “It’s not possible. It’s.. is it? Max, I saw those people.” Max turned to face her, his face a picture of confusion. “In my dreams, I mean.” “You dreamt about people who looked just like us and you didn’t think to tell us?” Michael burst out. Max and Maria both fixed him with a silencing look then turned back to Isabel, the same question written none-the-less on their faces. “I thought they were just dreams!” Isabel hissed defensively. “You know how my mind works overtime when I sleep. I never thought they were real.” “So you don’t know who they are?” Kyle questioned. “Uh, guys?” Liz broke in, as Isabel shook her head. “I think we may be about to get the answer to that question. They’re heading this way.” The group gravitated together as the strangers approached, the four aliens reflexively positioning themselves to defend the humans should the need arise. Max was the one to speak up when the smaller group stopped several feet away. “Who are you?” Zan raised a pierced eyebrow as he answered. “Seems to me dat we’re you, ‘cept diff’rent, dontcha think?” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * That initial afternoon was as awkward as it was freaky for those involved. For several long minutes, the two groups stood staring at each other, neither saying anything as they sized each other up. Eventually, they approached each other, and cautious introductions were made. One of the questions at the forefront of the Roswell group’s minds was “Why are you here?” Lonnie talked of her dreams, both she and Isabel realising that they had somehow connected subconsciously on the dream plane. Conversation soon turned to their knowledge of their alien heritage, and the Roswell set were filled with anticipation when their New York counterparts revealed that they had some limited memories of life on Antar. Michael talked of his discovery several months before that there had been another set of pods out there, admitting that he never considered the possibility that the other set would, in fact, be duplicates of themselves. The thought that they each had, in essence, an identical twin was astounding. It wasn’t long before talk turned to the most serious topic of all – the impending invasion by the skins. The moment the topic came up, everyone realised why Isabel’s mind had called out to their dupes. Being more alien, and having more memories, meant that the New York set had a little more control of their powers, and had discovered more abilities than the Roswell set. They all knew this could prove extremely useful in both their training sessions and the actual fight. Hesitant conversation continued until nightfall, when the Roswell teenagers reluctantly decided to head home before their parents grew suspicious. Their dupes refused to head back into town with them, turning down Kyle’s suggestion that the crashed at the Valentis’. They could, they insisted, sleep anywhere, and they were not at all sure about Jim Valenti, despite numerous assurances by the Roswell set that he was on their side. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Over the course of the next month, daily training sessions ensued. After a little exploration, a concealed location surrounded by rock formations had been discovered not far from the pod chamber, and it was agreed that this was a much more sensible location for the sessions. The whole group carried on with general fighting practise, and the dupes worked with their Roswell counterparts on power development and control. The New York aliens continued to refuse offers of a place to stay, even after repeated meetings with Jim Valenti, who had taken to visiting their sessions with helpful offerings of food. He was also proving his worth by helping the Roswell teens run interference with their occasionally concerned parents. It was during one such visit that he saw it. The twelve teens were taking a break, and were sitting in small groups talking. Jim watched silently as his son laughed at something Tess had said, and leant over to place a tender kiss on her lips. He had noticed subtle differences in their interactions at home, but hadn’t wanted to confront them in case he was wrong. He wasn’t quite sure what action to take now that his suspicions had been confirmed, so he waited a few minutes before approaching the group as if he hadn’t seen anything. He’d figure it out later. After talking briefly to Max, who had been sitting with his dupe, he left them to it. Max and Zan continued their previous conversation as they munched on the sandwiches Jim had brought out. They had been slowly forging a somewhat brotherly relationship over the time that Zan and the others had been in town, and were currently discussing a few of the differences in their lives. “We never really had no long contact with any one human,” Zan was saying. Max nodded. “Neither did Tess, from what she’s said, but Iz and I had our parents, to start with. And we’ve gone to school and everything over the years, so we met a lot of people with that.” “Guess dat’s good an’ bad.” Zan rejoined. “We never had to hide who we was from anyone close. Foolin’ strangers on da street is easy. But we was, what’s da word ya’d use, isolated, I guess. Just da four of us was all we had.” “There’s a lot of humans I wouldn’t have minded being isolated from,” Max half-joked, “but there are a few I’m incredibly glad that I met.” He looked over as he spoke to where Liz was chatting with Maria and Ava. Zan followed his gaze. “Ya friends seem cool.” He noticed the start adoration in his ‘brother’s’ eyes. “Ya got it bad, bro.” Max made no attempt to deny it, simply shrugging. “I’ve been crazy about Liz since the first day I saw her, back in 2nd grade.” Zan smiled. “Don’t blame ya man. If I’d grown up like y’all did, I pro’ly would be with someone like ‘er.” Max dragged his gaze from Liz to look questioningly at Zan. “You ever been in love?” Zan shook his head. “Me’n Aves gave it a go when we first figured out all that destiny shit, but it was never gonna work. Not like it did for Rath ‘n’ Lonnie. They’d felt it afore we even remembered all that past life crap, but me’n Aves just didn’t.” Zan took a breath, and bit off a chunk of his sandwich, swallowing before he continued. “We’s close, but not like that.” Max took a bite of his own sandwich. “I hope one day you find that person for you. It’s like nothing else in the world, no matter what planet you happen to be from.” Zan said nothing and continued to eat as Max carried on. “I know that loving Liz has involved a lot of risks, not least of which was exposing ourselves, but to me it’s all worth it, because she’s there.” * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Kyle and Tess walked into the kitchen that evening to find Jim sitting solemnly at the dining table. “Hey dad!” Kyle said brightly, sure that if anything serious had been wrong his dad would have called him. “What’s up?” Jim looked up and met their gazes. “I think the two of you might have something you should maybe be telling me, am I right?” Kyle knew what he was talking about by the glint in his father’s eye. He looked over at Tess, who shrugged. “How did you find out?” he asked, seeing no point in denying it. “I saw the two of you out in the desert today,” Jim answered shortly. “We were going to tell you, honestly.” Kyle said, “Just not quite yet.” He looked over at Tess sadly, his eyes saying ‘It was great while it lasted’. Sighing, he turned to face his father. “What are you going to do to us?” Tess asked nervously. Jim looked at their miserable expressions and realised he ought to give them a little relief. “Well, first off, I’m not going to make you break up,” he started, noting the startled joy that diffused across both the young faces. “Tess, you’re like a daughter to me, and that means I want to look out for you. I realised that you dating Kyle actually works out for me that way. I can keep an eye on the two of you. There are going to be a few rules though.” Kyle and Tess looked at him expectantly as he paused, ready to follow any rules he imposed as long as it allowed them to continue their budding relationship. “One – if the two of you are in the house together, all bedroom doors will remain open, especially if you are alone in there. Two – any and all dates you go on you WILL tell me where you are headed, and be home by the time I give you. Three – this is the last one so it’s a biggie – if either of you hurts the other, you’ll have ME to answer to. All clear?” Kyle and Tess just nodded. They could live with that.
